  • New AOKA Website Goes Online!
    The American Okinawan Karate Association has published its new website.  More than a year in planning and development, the new site offers members many new features.  Located at www.AOKA.org, the new site offers up-to-date information on current and upcoming association events, listings of instructors/dojos, forums where members can discuss subjects of interest to them and a new multimedia gallery.

  • Master Holwager Appointed to AOKA Promotions Board
    The American Okinawan Karate Association announced recently the appointment of two new members to its international Promotions Board - Master Aldo Panazzola and Master John Holwager.  John Holwager Sensei is Chief Instructor at American Isshinryu Karate Schools and the Colorado Budo Center.
    The Promotions Board is responsible for setting requirements/expectations for Dan (black belt) level promotions within the organization and the review and testing of individuals for advanced Dan levels.
    In addition to his new duties on the Promotions Board, Master Holwager also serves as AOKA Regional Director for the Western US, directs the regional testing board and serves on the AOKA's Website and Membership Committees.
  • Mary Holwager Sensei Appointed to AOKA Awards Committee
    Mary Holwager Sensei of American Isshinryu Karate Schools and the Colorado Budo Center was recently appointed to the American Okinawan Karate Association's Annual Awards Committee.
    The Awards Committee is responsible for reviewing nominations for the AOKA's Annual Awards program, selecting finalists and award recipients.
    Mary Holwager Sensei also serves on the AOKA's Women's Committee.
  • AOKA Regional Seminar Held in Utah
    On September 9th, 2007, an AOKA Regional Seminar was held in Monroe, Utah.  The seminar; hosted by Scott Brady Sensei and featuring Master Instructor John Holwager was an all day affair.  Starting with a youth seminar followed by instruction in various defensive practices for the adults and finishing with instruction in the use of the Japanese Sword, the seminar drew more than 30 participants from throughout the state.
  • Isshinryu Gasshuku Hosted in Denver Area
    In mid-August, more than 20 Isshinryu students of all levels of experience gathered in Thornton, Colorado, at the home of American Isshinryu Karate Schools for an intensive weekend of training.  With full days of training on Saturday and Sunday the work was hard and designed to be beneficial to all who participated.
    Saturday's training focused on a range of defensive scenarios beginning with the Atemi Waza, initial defense and impacting response, through Nage Waza, balance displacement and takedown or throw, to Ne Waza, ground grappling and controls.
    Sunday focused on Basics - Beginner, Advanced and Black Belt Levels and the practical use of weaponry.
